It all started with a screening of Ingmar Bergman’s The Magician (Ansiktet) at the Landmark Chez Artiste in Denver. A group of friends, artists, writers, and filmmakers gathered for the screening and, from that shared love of cinema, formed their cinema gang—the Bio Fladdermöss (Swedish for Cinema Bats).
Months later, Michael "Ffish" Hemschoot, Feni Hagman, and myself, from Worker Studio Animation began imagining how to reframe a completed stop-motion piece that still lacked a purpose. The original work portrayed a lighthearted camping scene, but through the lens of their cinematic conversations, they began speculating how mise-en-scène and dialogue might shift in the hands of iconic filmmakers. The presence of Ingmar Bergman was both inevitable and electrifying. The group agreed. The tent now belonged to Bergman.
With a new script by Sean J.S. Jourdan, Swedish narration by Joel Stenow, and an original score I composed in the tone and tempo of Bergman’s cinema, Camping à la Bergman emerged—a black-and-white existential comedy born from creative mischief and artistic reinvention.
How do you transform a stop-motion tent commercial into a meditation on mortality and Swedish absurdism? The challenge was to preserve the craftsmanship of the original production while reshaping its tone, script, and cinematic purpose. With no new animation, we relied entirely on storytelling pivots, performance, music, and editing to create a film that felt poetic, curious, and unexpectedly heartfelt.
Creative Development and Reinvention
Produced the original commercial concept and later co-conceived the creative direction for its reimagining as a short film. Helped reshape the piece in collaboration with the director, art leads, and narration team.
Original Score Composition
Composed a new original score inspired by the emotional minimalism of Ingmar Bergman’s film scores, using sparse instrumentation to underscore tone and rhythm.
Hands-On Stop-Motion Collaboration
Supported the team through hands-on stop-motion scheduling, build logistics, and animation staging during the original production.
Distribution and Festival Marketing
Led distribution efforts across festivals, public broadcast outlets, and streaming platforms. The film had reoccurring airings on Colorado Public Television 12 (PBS) and screened at multiple festivals.
• Transformed a spec commercial into a Bergman-inspired stop-motion short
• Co-developed reimagined concept with Michael Hemschoot and Feni Hagman
• Composed the original score to match Bergman’s emotional and aesthetic tone
• Aired on Colorado Public Television 12 (PBS) and screened at multiple festivals
Behind the Scenes | Studio Chronicles
Camping à la Bergman became a creative turning point for a piece that might have never been seen. Its thoughtful pivot from branded content into short film territory demonstrates how resourceful storytelling, collaboration, and humor can give a project new purpose. It aired on Colorado Public Television 12 (PBS), screened at the Georgia Film Festival, Skyline International Film Festival, Film Egypt Festival, Etiuda&Anima International Film Festival, and StopTrik International Film Festival, serving as a quirky, art-house addition to Worker Studio’s body of work.
This film is a reminder that creative life can emerge from commercial death. It was a joy to help reshape this piece from product pitch to Bergman parody and to do it through music and mischief on the wings of the Bio Fladdermöss.
